Los Angeles, California, Alimony Lawyer
California family laws are often imprecise regarding spousal support and maintenance following the dissolution of marriage. The various types of alimony are divided into several categories, generally determined by the length of marriage and the roles the spouses played to support each other during the marriage. If alimony will be a consideration in your forthcoming divorce settlement, your attorney will be responsible for fighting for an equitable arrangement, based on a variety of financial and lifestyle factors.

Types of California spousal support
In general, there are two types of alimony that can be awarded: Permanent support, which deals with the support to be received at the conclusion of the divorce going forward, and temporary support, designed to maintain the status quo (as much as possible) during the divorce. Both are critical to the needs and abilities of the parties and both must be given careful attention in their determination.
When determining alimony, the judge will consider factors such as:
- Earning capacity of both parties
- Marketable skills of the party seeking alimony
- Accustomed standard of living
- Future earning capacity caused by periods of unemployment
- Contributions made toward the education of the supporting party
- Debts and financial assets of both parties
