A romantic relationship can end for a variety of reasons. A couple may no longer find themselves attracted to one another. They may relocate to different areas and have difficulty carrying on a long-distance relationship. Or, the relationship may end for more serious reasons. Those who are intimate may have a bitter fight or one partner may discover that the other is having an affair. In the worst case, a relationship might be brought to an end by domestic violence. Domestic violence is a serious matter that should be seen as immediate grounds for ending a any kind of relationship.
In sport and in the working world, persistence is considered a virtue. Those who succeed, whether they are MVP of the team or President of the company, are often praised for how they "refuse to take 'no' for an answer." Ironically, when the games are over and the board meetings have ended, this same quality can result in negative consequences in another forum. A "determined" person may find him or herself facing legal action if a desired lover or friend begins to feel threatened by repeated unwelcome advances.
R& B singer Chris Brown has pleaded guilty to assaulting his former girlfriend, Rihanna. The gossip site TMZ.com had posted a photo of Rihanna with cuts and bruises after a pre Grammy Award altercation with Brown. Brown will be on probation for five years, attend a yearlong domestic violence prevention class and complete six months of community service. The judge also issued a "stay away" order that bars Brown from contacting Rihanna or coming near Rihanna. This closely watched case has played out internationally in the media due to the celebrity status of the parties involved. Intimate partner violence is an international problem that cuts across all social levels; perhaps the attention drawn to this case will motivate women involved in violent relationships to seek help.
