  • Complete at least 45 hours of approved continuing education in family law topics every three years,

  • Be evaluated by judges and other attorneys familiar with the attorney's work.

To maintain certification, a certified specialist must comply with the Standards of Specialist Certification established by the State Bar of California Board of Legal Specialization. The standards require that Certified Family Law Specialists meet higher standards of experience, education, knowledge, and skill than non-specialists. They are also required to take more Continuing Education courses in their specialty area than non-specialists.
