How much water should you be drinking each day?

By: Jessica Hrdlicka MS, RD, LD/N, CDCES

How much water you should drink when living with Diabetes Mellitus depends on a few factors—your body size, activity level, climate (Florida heat matters), and how well your blood sugar is controlled. But there are solid general guidelines:

 Basic daily target

  • Women: ~2.7 liters (about 11 cups) per day
  • Men: ~3.7 liters (about 15 cups) per day (from all fluids + water-rich foods)

Why hydration matters more with diabetes

When blood sugar is high, your body tries to flush out excess glucose through urine. This can lead to:

  • Frequent urination
  • Dehydration
  • Increased thirst

So, people with diabetes often need more water than average, especially if blood sugar isn’t tightly controlled.

When to drink more

Increase your intake if you:

  • Have high blood sugar levels
  • Are exercising or sweating (very relevant in Florida heat ☀️)
  • Are sick (fever, vomiting, diarrhea)
  • Drink caffeine or alcohol (both can dehydrate)

Practical rule of thumb

  • Aim for clear or light-yellow urine
  • Don’t wait until you feel thirsty (that can already mean mild dehydration)
  • Sip water consistently throughout the day rather than chugging large amounts

Special situations

  • If you have kidney or heart conditions (a possible complication of diabetes), your doctor may recommend fluid limits instead
  • Some medications can also affect hydration needs

Simple daily plan

  • Start your morning with 1–2 glasses of water
  • Drink a glass before each meal
  • Carry a water bottle and sip regularly
  • Add extra water during hot weather or activity

Water Rich Foods

  • Tomatoes, Strawberries, Cauliflower, Broccoli
  • Spinach, Zucchini, Radishes, Lettuce
  • Watermelon, Peppers, cantaloupe, Oranges
  • Cucumber, Asparagus, Soups

Introducing Remote Patient Monitoring for Weight Loss

The support you need

The convenience you deserve

“I know what I am supposed to do but I just need to do it.”

If you have ever said this then we have an in-house program to help you achieve your goals of taking action.

With this program, called Remote Patient Monitoring (RPM), you will be checking your weight at home using a weight scale we send straight to your house which connects to our secure clinical portal. Our qualified healthcare professional team will reach out to you monthly, to manage your weight under the specific treatment plan prescribed.

Many studies have shown that in addition to medications, healthy life choices such as regular exercise and a healthy diet can lower weight and reduce complications. This is easy to say but difficult to implement. We have designed this RPM program to provide you with ongoing education and self-management support. Together with you, we will set SMART goals that are Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Time-bound. We also work alongside certified diabetic educators and registered dieticians who provide perspectives and advice, identify obstacles, and provide accountability so that you take action.

Ask your doctor if the Remote Patient Monitoring program is right for you!

*The RPM program is currently only for patients who have Medicare.

If you would like more information about weight management, glucose monitoring, diabetes nutrition, heart healthy or kidney friendly meal ideas please call our office to schedule a consult with one of our Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialists at 561-659-6336 ext 8012.
